Happy September! Summer seems to fly by every year, but here at Kebler Corner, we’re especially excited for what comes next: fall in the North Fork Valley.
The aspens will soon begin their annual transformation from green to brilliant shades of gold, yellow, orange, and even red, and if you’ve been thinking about planning a Colorado leaf-peeping trip, now is the time to start planning.
Leaf-Peeping Season Is Almost Here
There are plenty of beautiful places to see fall colors in Colorado, but Kebler Pass is something special.
Kebler Pass is home to one of the largest aspen groves in the United States, stretching for miles through the West Elk Mountains between Paonia and Crested Butte. The massive aspen stand is one of the area’s most spectacular natural attractions and has become a favorite destination for photographers, hikers, cyclists, and anyone looking for that quintessential Colorado fall experience.
And here’s the best part: Kebler Corner sits right at the base of Kebler Pass! That means you don’t have to spend your entire fall vacation driving hours to find the golden aspens. Stay with us, wake up in the mountains, grab a coffee and a snack from our General Store, and head straight up Kebler Pass to experience the changing colors.

When Will the Aspens Change?
This is the question we get every fall—and unfortunately, there’s no exact answer. Fall color depends on elevation, temperature, moisture, and weather conditions, and the timing can vary from year to year. Generally, the highest elevations begin changing first, with the colors gradually moving down the mountains. (See More: Colorado Fall Colors by Elevation). For Kebler Pass, historical estimates (as well as our personal expertise) typically put peak color around late September to early October.
However, 2026 may be a little different. After a hot and exceptionally dry summer, forecasters are expecting fall colors to potentially arrive about a week earlier than normal in some parts of Colorado. Drought stress can cause aspens to change earlier and can also shorten the duration of peak color. Areas that have received more moisture may have a better display.
Our advice? If seeing the aspens is at the top of your list, plan for mid-to-late September and keep your schedule flexible.

A Few Tips for Your Kebler Pass Leaf-Peeping Trip
Stick to Weekdays if possible. Fall is one of the busiest times of year on Kebler Pass. A mid-week visit means fewer cars, better parking at popular pull-offs, and beautiful, unobstructed views!
Don’t just drive through. There are plenty of opportunities to stop, hike, take photographs, and explore the aspens along the pass.
Bring layers. September weather in the mountains can change quickly. A sunny afternoon can turn into a chilly evening in a hurry.
Give yourself time. The pass is beautiful from beginning to end, so don’t treat it as simply a road between two towns. Build in time to stop and enjoy it.
Check road conditions before you go. Kebler Pass is a seasonal mountain road, and conditions can change quickly in the fall. Stop in at the general store to get the latest updates.

Mountain Harvest Festival | September 25–27
If you’re looking for another reason to visit the North Fork Valley this fall, mark your calendar for the Mountain Harvest Festival in Paonia, September 25–27.
This annual celebration brings together local music, art, farms, food, wine, and spirits for a full weekend of events throughout the community. The festival includes live music, farm tours, wine and cider tastings, arts and crafts, food, a chili cookoff, a pub crawl, and plenty of opportunities to experience the local character of the North Fork Valley.
And of course, late September is also prime time to be watching the aspens.

Current Fire Restrictions
We have some good news to share: Kebler Corner is back under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions!
We’ve received some much-needed rain recently, and we’re grateful for every drop. The moisture has provided some relief from the extremely dry conditions we’ve experienced this summer and has allowed fire restrictions in Gunnison County to be reduced from Stage 2.
While the recent rain is certainly welcome, we’re not out of the woods yet. Conditions remain dry across much of Colorado, and wildfire danger can increase quickly when temperatures rise and conditions dry back out. For now, please continue to follow all Stage 1 restrictions and use extra caution with anything that could potentially start a fire. We appreciate our guests helping us protect the campground, surrounding forest, and the communities we call home.

Start Planning Your Fall Getaway
Fall doesn’t last long in the Colorado mountains, but that’s part of what makes it so special. For a few short weeks each year, the mountains surrounding Kebler Corner turn into a sea of gold.
