It’s finally here. 🍂

Fall has arrived in the North Fork Valley, and the mountains are starting to put on one of Colorado’s most spectacular shows. The aspens are turning gold, the air is getting crisp, and if you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to take a fall drive over Kebler Pass, this is the time to go.

Why Kebler Pass Is a Colorado Fall Secret

Kebler Pass is home to one of the largest aspen groves in the United States, and when the leaves turn, the scale of it is hard to appreciate until you see it for yourself.

Miles of golden aspens stretch across the West Elk Mountains, creating a landscape that feels almost endless. While places like Maroon Bells and other well-known Colorado destinations get much of the fall-color spotlight, Kebler Pass remains one of those special Colorado drives where you can experience an incredible aspen display without quite the same level of crowds.

And we’re lucky enough to be right at the base of it.

Kebler Corner is your home base for fall in the North Fork Valley. Stay in one of our cabins or RV sites, wake up surrounded by Colorado mountains, grab some coffee and snacks from our General & Liquor Store, and head straight up the pass for a day of fall-color chasing.

Your Perfect Fall Day Trip: Kebler Corner to Crested Butte

Want to make a full day of it? Here’s one of our favorite ways to experience Kebler Pass in the fall.

☕ 1. Start at Kebler Corner

Before you head up the pass, stop by the Kebler Corner General & Liquor Store for coffee, snacks, drinks, and anything else you might need for the drive.

Fill up your cup, grab some road-trip snacks, and make sure your camera is charged. You’re going to want it.

🍂 2. Drive Over Kebler Pass

Give yourself plenty of time for this drive. Without stops, the pass takes about an hour and a half from one end to the other, but during fall color season, you’ll want to slow down and enjoy it.

Plan on 1–1½ hours of driving time plus plenty of extra time for photographs, scenic overlooks, and exploring.

The road climbs through enormous stands of aspens before opening up to sweeping mountain views. Pull over at designated pull-outs, get out, take some pictures, and enjoy the scenery rather than rushing from one end to the other.

Late afternoon can be especially beautiful when the sunlight hits the golden trees.

🍕 3. Lunch in Crested Butte

Once you reach Crested Butte, head downtown for lunch.

One of our favorite stops for a casual mountain-town meal is The Secret Stash, right on Elk Avenue. Grab a pizza, take a little time to relax, and then head out to explore town.

🏔️ 4. Walk Elk Avenue

After lunch, spend some time wandering through downtown Crested Butte.

Elk Avenue is lined with colorful historic buildings, local shops, galleries, restaurants, and plenty of classic Colorado mountain-town character. Take your time, browse the shops, grab a coffee or treat, and enjoy the atmosphere.

🌅 5. Take the Scenic Route Home

When you’re ready to head back, take Kebler Pass again.

And here’s our favorite part: the drive back can look completely different.

As the afternoon light gets lower, the aspens take on that warm golden glow that makes fall in Colorado so magical. Stop for a few more photos, find a scenic pullout, and enjoy the changing light across the mountains.

🏕️ 6. Get Cozy Back at Kebler Corner

After a full day of exploring, there’s nothing better than coming back to camp.

Get cozy in your cabin or settle back into your RV, make dinner, relax, and enjoy a quiet evening in the mountains.

That’s the beauty of staying at Kebler Corner—you get to spend the day exploring one of Colorado’s most beautiful mountain towns and scenic drives, then come home to a peaceful place to unwind.

A Few More Fall Events to Put on Your Calendar

Fall in the North Fork Valley isn’t just about the aspens. Harvest season brings some of our favorite local events of the year.

The annual festival features live music, art, craft and food vendors, an antique car and motorcycle show, a 5K, competitions, and more. With more than 200 vendors and thousands of visitors each year, it’s become one of the region’s signature fall events.

Anthracite Creek Fly Fishing Report | Week of September 29

Fall is an excellent time to get out on Anthracite Creek. Current USGS measurements near the mouth show the creek running around 55 cubic feet per second, with water temperatures around 55°F, providing a good snapshot of current late-September conditions. As water temperatures cool, trout become increasingly active during the daytime, and fall can offer some of the most enjoyable fishing of the season.

What to Try
  • Blue-winged Olive patterns
  • Pheasant Tails
  • Hare’s Ears
  • Copper Johns
  • Elk Hair Caddis
  • Parachute Adams
  • Small terrestrial patterns
  •

Look for trout in deeper pools, riffles, seams, and slower water along the banks. On sunny fall afternoons, keep an eye out for rising fish and be ready to switch to smaller dry flies. As always, conditions can change quickly in the mountains, so take a few minutes to observe the water before choosing your fly.

Current Fire Restrictions: Bring on the S’mores!

We have another bit of good news to share: Gunnison County is currently back down to Stage 1 Fire Restrictions! After the much-needed rain we’ve received recently, we’re grateful to see restrictions easing. That means campers can once again enjoy fires in permanently constructed fire rings at developed campgrounds, as long as they follow the current Stage 1 restrictions.

So yes—bring on the s’mores! 🔥🍫

Conditions can change quickly this time of year, so please check the latest restrictions before your trip and follow all posted rules while you’re here.

Come See the Aspens

The golden season is short, and that’s part of what makes it so special.

If you’ve been waiting for the right time to visit Kebler Pass, this is your window. Come spend a few days in the North Fork Valley, take the scenic drive to Crested Butte, explore the aspens, enjoy a cider at a local orchard, fish Anthracite Creek, and come back to Kebler Corner to relax at the end of the day.

The mountains are turning gold. Come see them for yourself.

Yours in camping,

Emily & Paul
